Terms of Service
Last updated: 14 June 2026
Please read these terms carefully before using Qalam. By creating an account or booking a session you agree to be bound by them. If you do not agree, do not use the platform.
1. Who We Are
Qalam (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an online marketplace that connects students with verified Islamic scholars for private, live tutoring sessions. We are based in the United Kingdom. Contact us at support@qalamtutor.com.
2. Definitions
- Platform — the Qalam website and any associated services
- Student — a registered user who books sessions with scholars
- Scholar — a verified educator who offers and delivers tutoring sessions through the platform
- Session — a live, one-to-one video tutoring appointment booked through the platform
- Booking — a confirmed reservation for a session, including payment
3. Eligibility
By creating a Qalam account, you confirm that you are 18 or over. If a session is for a child, a parent or guardian creates the account, books the session, and remains the contracting party responsible for it; the “Who is this session for?” option at checkout is how you tell us a booking involves a child. Scholars must be at least 18 years old to receive payouts, as required by our payment processors, Stripe and Wise.
By registering, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate and that you have the legal capacity to enter into these terms.
4. Accounts
You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at support@qalamtutor.com if you suspect unauthorised access.
You may not create more than one account, share your account with others, or use another person’s account without permission.
5. Scholar Applications and Verification
Scholars apply to join the platform and are subject to a manual verification process. We reserve the right to accept or decline any application at our sole discretion. Approval is not guaranteed and may be revoked if a scholar no longer meets our standards.
Scholars must ensure that all profile information — including qualifications, credentials, subjects taught, and pricing — is accurate and kept up to date. Providing false information is grounds for immediate removal from the platform.
Scholars are independent educators, not employees or agents of Qalam. We do not supervise or control the content of sessions beyond our community standards.
6. Bookings and Cancellations
Making a booking
Students book sessions by selecting an available time slot and completing payment. A booking is confirmed only once payment has been successfully processed.
Booking for a child
If a session is for your child rather than yourself, select “My child” at checkout. You remain the account holder and the person responsible for the booking; your child is the session participant.
Cancellations by students
Students may cancel a booking up to 24 hours before the scheduled session start time for a full refund. Cancellations made within 24 hours of the session are non-refundable unless the scholar also fails to attend.
Cancellations by scholars
Scholars should provide as much notice as possible if they need to cancel. If a scholar cancels or fails to attend, the student will receive a full refund. Repeated cancellations by a scholar may result in suspension or removal from the platform.
Cooling-off period
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you normally have 14 days to cancel a service contract. Because sessions are usually scheduled sooner than that, at checkout we ask you to confirm you’d like the session to go ahead as scheduled and that you understand you lose this statutory cancellation right once the session has been delivered. This doesn’t reduce the cancellation terms below, which are often more generous than the statutory minimum.
For full details on refund eligibility, dispute resolution, and processing times, see our Refund Policy.
7. Payments
All payments are processed by Stripe. By making a payment you agree to Stripe’s Terms of Service. Qalam does not store your card details.
UK-based scholars receive payouts via Stripe Connect. To receive payments, they must complete Stripe’s identity verification (KYC) process and accept Stripe’s Connected Account Agreement. Payout timing is subject to Stripe’s standard processing schedule.
Scholars outside the UK receive payouts via Wise. To receive payments, they must provide valid bank account details for their country and currency, which Wise uses to run its own Know Your Customer (KYC) checks. Payout timing is subject to Wise’s processing schedule.
Qalam deducts a platform fee from each transaction before transferring the scholar’s share. The applicable fee is shown to scholars during onboarding. Prices displayed to students are inclusive of all fees — there are no hidden charges.
All amounts are in British Pounds (GBP). You are responsible for any taxes applicable to your earnings or purchases in your jurisdiction.
8. Sessions and Conduct
Video calls
Sessions take place via live video using our integrated video provider. Sessions are not recorded by the platform. You must not record sessions without the explicit consent of the other participant.
Expected conduct
All users must treat each other with respect. Harassment, discrimination, abusive language, inappropriate content, or any behaviour that violates Islamic ethical standards or applicable law is strictly prohibited.
Off-platform arrangements
You must not arrange or solicit sessions outside the platform in order to circumvent our fees. Attempting to do so may result in suspension or termination of your account.
Sessions involving a child
Where a booking is flagged as being for a child, the scholar must keep video on for the full session and must not contact the child privately outside the platform. If you have a safeguarding concern about a session, contact us immediately at safeguarding@qalamtutor.com.
9. Prohibited Uses
You may not use Qalam to:
- Violate any applicable law or regulation
- Impersonate another person or misrepresent your qualifications
- Upload or transmit harmful, offensive, or unlawful content
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the platform
- Scrape, copy, or redistribute platform content without permission
- Use the platform for any commercial purpose not expressly permitted by these terms
You are responsible for ensuring that your access to and use of Qalam, including any religious educational content, complies with the laws of your country of residence.
10. Intellectual Property
All content on the Qalam platform — including the name, logo, design, and software — is owned by or licensed to Qalam and may not be copied, reproduced, or redistributed without our written permission.
Scholars retain ownership of any original teaching materials they create. By uploading content to the platform (such as a profile bio or introduction video) you grant Qalam a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display that content on the platform for the purpose of operating the service.
11. Disclaimers
Qalam provides a marketplace to connect students and scholars. We do not guarantee the accuracy of scholar profiles, the quality of any session, or specific learning outcomes. The platform is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
We are not responsible for the content of sessions or for any advice given by scholars during sessions. Scholars are independent educators and their views do not represent those of Qalam.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by UK law, Qalam’s total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the platform is limited to the amount you paid for the session giving rise to the claim.
We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, including lost data, loss of income, or loss of opportunity, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such losses.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.
13. Termination
You may close your account at any time by contacting us at support@qalamtutor.com. Outstanding confirmed bookings will be honoured or refunded before closure.
We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms, engage in fraudulent activity, or if we are required to do so by law. We will give reasonable notice where possible, except where immediate action is necessary to protect users or the platform.
14. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, except where mandatory consumer protection law in your country of residence applies.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes by email at least 14 days before they take effect and update the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the platform after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
